Small Screw Ups, Big Consequences.

Last night (2/22/15) I learned a valuable lesson during a lovely oscar party celebration where I nearly traded a piece of my finger with a hunk of chorizo in a meat dip I was making. I personally think the fingertip would have been an addition to the dip, considering that my blood is completely full of chemicals designed to murder anything organic they touch. It certainly would have added a very unique flavor profile to the dish!

Since transitioning from the inpatient oncology unit, I  have been on a reckless vendetta against my previous hospital chains. This has mostly been a very good thing for me, and hopefully those around me, until my carelessness and foolishness got the best of me last night. I dipped a pinky toe with a bloody hangnail into a shallow pool of hammerheads sharks. I made a very careless choice that caused me to end up in the ER at around 10pm.

Everything is fine now because Liana and I are absolute superhuman genius rockstars when it comes handling crises so my worst physical/medical consequence is the fact that I have to type with corn dog on my index finger.

By lopping off the tip of my digit, not only was my body unable to stop the bleeding, but I also opened myself up to a high risk infection. That is all currently being taken care of by a quick blood transfusion and is 100% fine..

There were some bigger consequences though:

  1.  I scared Liana with my carelessness (something I have unfairly done already)
  2. She had to leave the party/her friends way too early because she is a wonderful caring girlfriend and needed to make sure I got home from Broomfield in one piece.
  3. I didn’t get to see Birdman clean up or eat my awesome Oscar snacks (I WAS LOOKING FORWARD ALL OF THIS)
  4. I broke a very serious vow that I made with my girlfriend about my condition

I’m very sorry and I will make it up to her. I’m so #Leucky to have her, as you all already know!

The night wasn’t a complete disaster, however. After the ER fixed me up all pretty with a bionic fingertip I was able to make it home in time to catch my mother still awake.

She saw the condition of my pride and offered to do the knife work on the dessert crostini that I was going to make for the party (the ingredients stayed cold in the car because the setting for this weekend was planet Hoth)

Sorry you had to miss this one, Oscar Party Friends. I'll make it again for you.

It turned out to be exactly what my sad little broken ball of pride needed. With mom’s help the dish tasted like a decadent cloud of nature’s sweetest nectars. We ate it and fell asleep watching PBS cooking shows together in a mother/son bond that I will truly cherish for the rest of my life.

Having her here these past few weeks has been better for me than I could ever have imagined, and it will certainly be getting it’s own very important post in its own right..so stay tuned for another parental tribute!

And I’m glad Birdman won all of the awards. It deserved them, IMO…but I wouldn’t have been upset if Boyhood took more. This ends Academy Chat with your friendly Cancer Troll.

Way to go Bryce on finishing that dip! I had the leftovers today and you NAILED it.

  1. Sorry you had a mishap, but glad you are ok. Liana scores more points! I’m so glad you and your mom are able to spend some time together. It’s good for both of you. Another blessing in disguise. Take care.

      1. I was wondering about DeAnna. My intention was to ask the next time I replied to you, but now I don’t have to. Please tell her I send my best. The important thing about your finger incident is that it’s taken care of! God bless the medical people of this world. Hi to Mom and DeAnna please. Also thank Liana for taking good care of you! MrsT or Ann – which ever works for you!

  2. Glad you were able to go home. Also glad that you didn’t slice more than the tip off. Be very careful as you are more prone to infection than ever but I am sure you realize that.
Take care of yourself and tell your mom I appreciate her note on my Facebook page and glad you liked the prayer shawl.
    Love and hugs,
    Judy
